And of course that has all been now automated and the data is available online. I remember thinking early in my career that the assumption that managing online resources would be vastly easier than physical ones was probably not true, and this turns out to be. The Queens Public Library, like any other institution, needs to manage its inventory to know what resources it has and where they are all located. And we made significant advances with that apart from just people not having to sort through card catalogs. I think one of the most important ones with regards to physical materials is that people are able to request things from different branches and get them in a short amount of time. When I first started, it was a huge problem that anything that was not a huge best seller, such that it would be in every single branch, very often classic titles, you'd need two or three of them. And they were always inevitably located in the three branches furthest from the customer who needed them. And it would take a long time to make sure that they could be found and ofttimes the customer might even have to go to that other branch to pick them up. And with our electronic data, we're much more able to supply those needs quickly. And that's been a big thing during the pandemic when people were only able to pick up materials and not browse at all. So that's the big improvement, and all this data has to be secured and input either by people typing it in or by loading data files making sure that they're correct. And this is what Metadata Services does.\n\n","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/45665/file/118714#t=124.0,315.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/45665/file/118714/transcript/30259/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"\t\nRegina Shapiro: Well! And I will share a story about my former boss, Mr. Stuart Rosenthal, and one of my colleagues in the IT Department, Syed Rasool. Mr. Rosenthal was very serious about keeping his kosher dietary restrictions and Mr. Rasool equally so about halal restrictions. And we had a vendor in St. Louis where we had to go from time to time for some training and meetings. And I remember this was in the days before you could look up everything on Yelp and the internet and -- no disrespect to St. Louis -- but it's not a culinary paradise for people who have dietary restrictions. And sometimes we would have a tremendous amount of materials that all needed to be processed and the data recorded. I think that would make the planning process easier for Administration, and it would certainly make supervising and keeping the work allocations steady for the staff. I would like to see -- and I think to some extent it's already happening -- some further integration of our resources. We have a lot more digital resources and that makes accessibility of our collections a bit more democratic. You don't have to be able to spend an entire day in our Archives now to access a lot of our digital materials. You don't necessarily have to come to the library to read an ebook, and again, that's been important during the pandemic. It does, however, get a little confusing. Back in the day you looked in the card catalog, and you'd pretty much seen all the available resources. Now, sometimes you don't know whether you need to look at hoopla, Overdrive or Queens Memory, or exactly \"Where do I need to look to find these resources?\" and that needs still to be integrated a little bit better. I think that's a problem for a lot of libraries. And I think another thing that would be good is some responsible crowdsourcing. And again, I think some of that's already happening.
