Next door to my building on 82nd Street in Jackson Heights, both the church and its garden have been a personal place of refuge for a decade.  \u003cbr\u003eI have been fortunate to have shared fellowship at Christmas and Easter services at St. Mark’s services led by the warm, passionate Father Antonio Checo. His sermons often addressed social justice issues, which I appreciated, and his command of ritual heightened the celebratory atmosphere of the holidays.\u003cbr\u003eIn ordinary time, the churchyard’s trees and perennials have enabled me to better connect with the changing seasons and to step outside the city’s demanding pace when I’ve needed a short respite.\u003cbr\u003eIn late March 2020, Father Checo was stricken with COVID-19.  He died shortly thereafter on April 1.  His death is a heartbreaking loss for the parish and for the community.
