After doing some grocery shopping on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I sat down in Athens Square Park in Astoria. It is a common resting point for shoppers in the neighborhood. I sat on the bench, enjoying the unseasonably warm weather, and watched a group of boys with a soccer ball. There were about 10 of them, middle school aged, and most wore soccer attire. They yelled loudly and excitedly, in Arabic, I would guess. Occasional insertion of English place names, such as "Astoria Park" indicated that they might have been arguing about whether to play a game of soccer in Athens Square or move on to another location. (Technically, soccer playing in Athens Square is against the rules, but rarely is there a parks worker to enforce it.) A little blond boy around three kicked his own soccer ball around the group of big boys. People were scattered all over the park, sitting on benches, enjoying the afternoon."

Q100 bus from Broadway to Queensbridge, March 21, 2013

A note from wild sound recordist Sofya Aptekar, "I made this recording as part of my study of public spaces in Astoria. The bus is a moving public space, even though we may not think of it that way. This particular bus was very crowded. When I turned on the recorder, there was a large group of nursing home aides on the bus, and about a dozen students from Long Island City High School were attempting to squeeze onto the bus at the Broadway stop. They got on and the bus pulled away. Q100 is an express, and the next stop was the Queensbridge F stop. On the recording, you can hear several conversations, including one in Spanish between two middle aged home aides, and another between two teenage girls. You can also hear the jolts of the creaky bus as it hits potholes on 21st Street and competes for space with taxicabs and semis. The bus arrives at the next stop, and most people, myself included, get off to go to the train station.
