And so from Bayside, I decided to go back to school at Queens College because I was still a Customer Service Rep [Customer Service Representative] and wanted to pursue my master's. And then for my master's, like I said, I went to Queens College for Library Science. I took a course with Andrew Jackson, who is—I'm so glad he is now [on] the board of trustees. He knows me [laughs]. I’m very thrilled to take his course in Library Science and understanding the history of library science and how it works. And basically, he gave us the real rundown of how library public service works. So, I think the youth nowadays got it so good [laughs]. I mean when I was a teenager in the library, it was that, “Shh. Stop. Don't talk. Be quiet. It was so big. And I just remember the internet coming out. AOL, America Online was coming out, so I'm like in that generation. So, it's evolving. It's changing. And she was the manager at that time. And Cambria Heights for me, to this day, I still remember how much I loved working with the youth. Everyone—I really got a gist of working with the youth and with parents, too. So, that branch really kept me busy with programs after programs. I was very into the science, STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics] when it was announced about how important science and math is incorporated. And mind you those are the two subjects that I—to this day I still struggle with. And I'm going to face that with my daughter because she's now in school. I wanted to ask you a question about what role did reading have in your life, more at home, in your family, on the bookshelf at home? So, reading—my father loved to read the newspaper. Still to this day, he keeps up with even his international newspaper La Prensa from Guatemala [laughs] because we have digital services now. So, he really is on top of that—which I'm very glad we have PressReader. So thankful we're subscribed to that. My mother is like more of the Home Ec [Home Economics] kind of person. So, I had to have tutors read to me and likewise because my parents, their English wasn't really good at the time because they immigrated here. And Spanish was spoken at home. I was more of the translator for my parents when they needed, I don't know, to order food or go to their medical appointments. Even to this day, I still help my mom with her medical appointments. Overall, I think the constant communication that we had and literacy played a huge huge part in our lives. And my father would spend money on buying books back then. Barnes and Noble was nearby at Forest Hills so we bought a few early literacy chapter books. Understanding the vocabulary, the words, the phonetics, the pronunciation, the alphabets, you know, all that. So, I started reading to my daughter. Now, every bedtime we have to read a book. I don't care what it is, if it's the same book. Then, I think what hit me the most that I really enjoyed reading and I have a collection of it—well, not really a collection but just that particular author—E.B. White, Charlotte's Web. Charlotte's Web for me was just like, “Oh my god! The spider and the pig.” It's just a true friendship. How she is so giving. Overall, that's my takeaway from that book. And so, I've always been that kind of person of being of service to my neighbors and friends that I don't expect anything back in return. Or just even to this day they say, “Your smile is enough to get me through the day.” And I was like, “Great! I did something. I accomplished something.” So, for me, that's always been a blessing for me. And so, reading, again, has always been fundamental. And I'm currently reading. I check out my books. I was just like, the poverty, the famine, like books that I could somewhat relate to and understand how it's like being raised in a low-income household. You don't realize the privilege it is to work in a public sector where you're exposed to so much opportunities that you can continue to grow from. And that's what, like I said going back to reading, I love my books. I maintain my books [laughs]. So everywhere I have been to—P.S. 182, 82, Junior High School 217, Hillcrest High School was my high school. So, assignments, and the big—it was only one computer and there was [laughs] a roster. Mind you, there was no [unclear] system. There was no, you know—technology was so limited. And I think it was about two computers, and it was in a cylinder of some sort at the main library. And we had a sign in sheet [laughs]. We had to write our name, a certain time frame that the computer was available. I didn't know how it worked out but somehow we got our prints in. It wasn't always—it wasn't colored, but it was just the AOL [America Online], AOL online was the main website, I believe. Bayside was beautiful and still to this day is a very beautiful branch.
