He was a president of the Jackson Heights Community Federations for ten years and he was involved in numerous civic and other community organizations. He served in the New York State Assembly for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, he advocated for schools, passed legislation that made it illegal to drive without insurance and was also one of the first elected officials to support same-sex marriage in New York.
