He talks about what it was like coming out as lesbian (before he realized he was trans) in a conservative area like Whitestone, getting beat up because of it, and learning about LGBTQ culture when he was old enough to leave the neighborhood. AJ says that Whitestone has gotten more conservative and less tolerant since the elections in 2016, and he feels more unsafe there.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eIn the 1990s when AJ was a teenager there was no internet – but there were bookstores, museums, and a few gay bars that had nights that were 18+.
