I grew up in Maspeth, Queens. Our local branch was on Grand Avenue. So that was a place where, you know, from very early on, you would walk with your family to do grocery shopping, banking, whatever. Getting to go into the library was always a treat. I do remember going to the children's section, which was really exciting because it was colorful. There were always, you know, new things being put up on the walls, the desks for my size, and getting to pick out books was, you know, just fun. I remember getting my first library card and feeling official, somehow, cause there was a little card with my name on it, so that was exciting.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014#t=45.0,91.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014/transcript/34043/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Joan Curcio: And then throughout my life, it was a place where I went to get books I needed for school, to just find things, to read for fun to figure out things that maybe we didn't want to ask people questions about at the time before there was an internet. As I got into high school it was a place where you learn to really do research. At the time you had to physically go to different buildings. If you needed to get something, if you were very well-prepared, you could do an interlibrary loan and have it sent, but that might take weeks. So,you know, we got to learn about the different libraries. I remember the main branch being in Jamaica, to, to go, to get things we needed for research papers. So it's just always been a part of my life.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014#t=91.0,142.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014/transcript/34043/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Joan Curcio: So the library has just continued to evolve and grow, I think, to respond to the needs of communities in a lot of ways. The most obvious being, keeping up with a new media and technologies. You know, over time it went from a place where people could get books to a place where people could also get, you know, music, DCs when, when they became available, movies, VHS, and then DVDs. It evolved over time to be a place where people would use the internet, early on when that was a real luxury for people to be able to have access in their homes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014#t=142.0,187.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014/transcript/34043/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Joan Curcio: You could go to your library branch, access the internet, learn how to use it, print material. And then as time went on further to their very excellent website where, where you can now you know, set up your own account, you can get digital media. I remember for my daughter early on wanting to look at a lot of different magazines you can set up a system where she could go in and check out the different magazines and, and actually just see them online know what she liked. And then as a community resource, I went from a place where there would be just maybe meetings, you know, children's readings, a different kind of book club, kind of situations to a real meeting center where people from different cultures, backgrounds were able to get together, get information.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014#t=187.0,244.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/51385/file/124014/transcript/34043/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Joan Curcio: I've seen it become a resource for legal information. You know, it's very notable if people don't know where to go to get questions about citizenship or different issues that come up that's a place that they can go. I know I've seen a lot of things evolve with different communities, particularly in Queens Bengali readings, things in all different languages the LGBTQ community. I know I saw a a drag queen story time that that really became very popular during COVID as a place, a lot of the teens were really excited to check that out. So I don't have any kind of aha moment where it's like, oh, it saved someone's life, but but, but definitely I would say I would use my mother as an example. You know, she was a very intelligent person who is very interested in learning, always wanted to be current. Money was tight, so it was, you know, a place where she could go from early on for raising her five children and, and many of her grandchildren, to get resources, to just learn about new things, to pick new topics. She loved to travel, nationally, internationally, locally to really explore, the five boroughs. So her and her friends got a, a lot of their information there. You know, their starting point to, plan their expeditions and, and later on a meeting place for friends. So, so throughout the course of her octogenarian life, it was really some place that, improved her quality of life. Certainly people want to be responsible. We want to share resources but we have an ever evolving community of people who really might not have access to community resources.
