Etline shares memories of the large three-bedroom house in Jamaica that Etline grew up in and its close proximity to public transportation. Etline describes the multicultural nature of the neighborhood, local places of worship (including the synagogue Etline attended near Rufus King Park), and local businesses (particularly along Sutphin Boulevard, Hillside Avenue, and Jamaica Avenue) during the 1950s and 1960s. Etline also recalls visiting the original Central Library building on Parsons Boulevard as a child and being impressed by a mural in the building that depicted Native Americans.

While attending Queens College, Etline moved to an apartment in Kew Gardens Hills with Etline's ageing parents. Etline explains that Kew Gardens Hills similarly had a diverse population with convenient public transportation; there was also a large Jewish population and numerous businesses selling kosher foods. Etline moved to Flushing after marrying in 1972. Etline describes the multicultural population in Flushing in the 1970s, the growth of the Korean and Chinese population in Flushing since that time, and recent development projects west of Main Street. Regarding recreation in Flushing, Etline highlights numerous parks and historic sites, including Kingsland Homestead and the Voelker Orth Museum. Etline comments on restrictions to public access of school playgrounds in Flushing and the destruction of historic structures, including the Macedonia AME Church on Union Street and 39th Avenue and RKO Keith's Theater on Main Street and Northern Boulevard, due to planned construction of new buildings.

Rights Statement

CC BY-NC-SA Contact digitalarchives@queenslibrary.org for research and reproduction requests.

Source Metadata URI
http://digitalarchives.queenslibrary.org/search/browse/40424
Date
2019-09-17 (created)
Tags
Queens College Alumni
Type
Audio
Agent
Lois Etline (Interviewee)","Alice Ostrowsky (Interviewer)
Coverage
1940s-2019 (temporal)","Jamaica, Kew Gardens Hills, and Flushing, Queens, NY; Monticello, NY (spatial)
Language
English

Clip 1: Longtime Flushing resident Lois Etline reflects on adjusting to life in Flushing as the Asian population in the neighborhood has grown.

Summary of Full Interview

Lois Etline speaks with interviewer Alice Ostrowsky about growing up in Jamaica circa 1952 through 1969, living in Kew Gardens Hills circa 1970 through 1972, and living in Flushing since then.
