I think the development of the department, is probably the-- I won't say it's my favorite project, but I will say it is the project that's probably had the most impact. Prior to 2014, volunteer services or, the library volunteer corp was the responsibility primarily of our branch staff amongst all of their other duties. And so if individuals had to come to the library or wanted to volunteer with the library, they actually had to go to individual branches to find out if they had opportunities. And then from there a lot of the onboarding was really-- it varied based on what locations you went to. So when I came on board in 2014, the goal was to centralize operations to expand our reach. So we went from being sort of neighborhood specific to really borough wide and even citywide.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418#t=98.0,170.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418/transcript/42103/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Scott McLeod: So now when people come to the library system-- come to Queens Public Library and want to volunteer, they have the opportunity to not only see what we offer within their immediate neighborhoods, but also borough wide. They're able to see what other branches are doing or where their talents and their time can be utilized. We also expanded the number of opportunities, beyond maybe one or two projects, to-- at any given point, there are probably 300 volunteers working in, I would say a dozen different capacities. So that has been sort of, I'll say, my favorite ongoing project, cause it never stops. It's always-- COVID allowed us to branch out into virtual volunteerism. And so that was a new foray, something that we really hadn't done before.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418#t=170.0,235.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418/transcript/42103/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Scott McLeod: And so still trying to figure out how to utilize volunteers that aren't physically in our spaces. And that's been very interesting and informative and has sort of-- we've seen that evolve over time. On another level, I think my favorite service project has to be our Youth Leadership Council. That was initiative that we worked with programs and services with the team coordinator, Melissa Malanuk and I co-facilitated leadership councils at Flushing, and we did that for three years. I got to literally on a week by week basis go out and work with teens and young adults: 14 and 21 year olds. And really working with them to understand civic engagement, to understand community problems, to identify problems, to use data to develop strategies on how to address things. Everything from the lack of life skills in the public school system to the need to clean up a local subway system. How do you advocate to public and elected officials to do that? So whether it is pivoting because of COVID or because of voter rights or equity and law enforcement and civil liberties. We've always been able to sort of pivot to address those issues in really unique ways. I don't think the library stands on principle that you have to do it one way. I think we try a lot of different ways. Some of them, I think resonate, some of them don't resonate quite as much. I think it depends on the audience. I think it depends on the culture, the geography. So I think we're very fluid. It is talking to our friends of the library and, and watching them get excited about an idea that they have to bring to their community into their local library. And watching it go from an idea to a full blown project or an activity. I think it's all around us. They come with the ability to fundraise and to outreach into those communities to find out what's going on and what local residents would like to see or bring to their library. It's volunteer.queenslibrary.org. They can also go through the main page. That's a little bit trickier to navigate. They have to find the volunteer page and then it will take them to our microsite. But we also have a community partnership. So we work with high schools and universities, and we'll get contacted by a faculty member or a student. And they would like to bring the students into the library. So we'll set up a partnership with them and set aside different projects at different locations. We've added pieces to that where they actually do-- I won't say auditing, but they have to actually sit in on our staff members and sessions that they do so they can pick up tips. We have a relationship with Touro College. We worked with them last summer to pilot a world of work program for high school juniors and seniors. And so that one was heavily contested. We put a call out for students to take a college course. So basically it was-- we had got probably 80 applications for 25 spots. And it was a six week program, four hours a week, where students had to attend a college course on-- it really was the psychology of the work place. So it wasn't just learning work skills, but also understanding the mindset of being in that environment. And we coupled that with information from our job and business academy, which was more fundamental skills along with an introduction to civic engagement that I did. Prior to COVID we really didn't get into virtual volunteerism. There really wasn't a need to, and so when we first kind of shifted to a virtual format, I sat down for a minute and sort of said, what can we do? What programs can the library offer volunteers when we can't physically go into our buildings? One of the first projects that we kind of followed was social media ambassadors. Because we had shifted a lot of our programming online, the general public wasn't used to accessing and really knowing what we were offering virtually through WebEx and Zoom early on. So, we enlisted the help of volunteers to help spread the message. We said, okay, we'll create the post.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418#t=1089.0,1146.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418/transcript/42103/annotation/27","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Scott McLeod: And you guys have to put 'em out on social media. You have to tag them with hashtag QPL so that we can track them. It was really-- it was a learning curve, I think for everyone. How do you manage volunteers when they're not here? How do you track that they're doing what we ask them to do? How do you give 'em service hours? We were going down a lot of roads to be able to do that. We've also-- we started using volunteers within other departments. We had virtual resume coaches. We had virtual ESOL classes and conversation groups. We worked with the mayor's office on immigrant affairs to do a six week session under their curriculum called We Speak New York, which is a video-based ESOL conversation practice group curriculum.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418#t=1146.0,1210.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418/transcript/42103/annotation/28","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Scott McLeod: So we started doing that. Recently, we have volunteers working remotely with some of our administrative departments. At the time we were shifting into digital timekeeping for our staff. It was funny because the volunteers had been doing digital timekeeping probably a year to two years prior to the staff doing it. So, we were able to have volunteers help our HR department start making some of the transition. There was a lot of paper that had to be-- lot of data entry that had to be put into systems to be able to keep things going back and forth. When our organizational assessment team came in and, looking at data and data maps and answering a lot of-- how many of our branches are in close proximity to schools or parks? Which was some of the stuff that I was asking about.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418#t=1210.0,1269.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418/transcript/42103/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Scott McLeod: We have volunteers actually creating data maps, illustrating all of these things. So we've done a lot virtually, I think we've just scratched the surface in doing that. Our Queens Memory Program has been really fantastic in utilizing volunteers with their program and having volunteers do interviews and then also transcribing and editing. So, like I said, we're just getting started with virtual volunteerism. I think we-- through a bad situation with the COVID pandemic-- opened up opportunities in terms of how people work, how people learn. It opened up an entire new population to be served virtually. People who don't necessarily have time to come into our locations, or may not geographically be located in the same counties and states, and sometimes even the same country as we are. So, we have expanded our reach and now it's figuring out how to be a more comprehensive library that is able to serve all the people. Our tagline is \"we speak your language.\" And it's not just spoken language. I think it's also a skills language. It's a learning language, it's a comprehension language. And so being able to take all of those tools and all of those possibilities out there and make the most of them is where I would love the library to continue to go to and continue to evolve into.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418#t=1311.0,1393.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/88359/file/181418/transcript/42103/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Tessa White: Right.
