[laughs] I actually--most of my life, I grew up in the Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, Corona area. And then after a while we tend, you know, it's pretty busy in that Jackson Heights, Corona area. We wanted something a little more quieter and, just something that, would be better for my family, I have a seven-year-old daughter and we actually found Glendale, and it was also closer to my family that also lives in Queens. And we fell in love the first day we saw it. It was a very nice quiet neighborhood and that's what we were looking for. And it was still kind of close to the subway and close to buses, you know, to be able to like commute to work. It seems that the population that I'm teaching, it kind of puts them at ease and they enjoy the process of creating. Although at the end, product is always like, that's what people mainly focus on is the end product. But I think people mostly benefit from the actual process of creating. And if there's yarn connected to it, symbolizing, like there's healing and there's also pins coming out of it, symbolizing obstacles. So it's pretty much saying that [pauses] art mends my heart. He's the first artist that I actually fell in love with and I just loved the way he outlined his art with, with that thick black outlining and all those pops of color. And then that kind of ventured into another artist. His name is Romero Britto. He also kind of uses the same kind of thick black outline with beautiful pops of color. I also have to mention, two of my favorite favorite artists who are Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/21/collection_resources/64219/file/148884#t=714.0,766.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/21/collection_resources/64219/file/148884/transcript/35422/annotation/34","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Janet Gomez: That being said, my favorite museum is the MoMA because they have, their artworks in it. And just the first time that I saw The Starry Night, which is Vincent van Gogh's artwork, his thick, bold impasto like paint strokes were just magical, as well as, um, Monet's waterlilies were just beautiful. Most recently though, I came across an artist. She has been, famous for a long time, but in 2019, I went into the Chelsea gallery, like gallery area. And I went into, uh, Garth Grennan gallery and I came across an artist named Howardena Pindell. She's an American painter and she also does mixed media and her works explore texture, color,---kind of like the process of art. And she deals with a lot of like different issues like racism and feminism and exploitation. She's known for like a lot of different techniques and different materials used in her artwork, and abstract paintings. So when I actually entered the gallery, I was greeted by a beautiful, vibrant, like oval, textured artwork, titled Fire. And at first glance, it was like bright colors and the piece kind of like pulled you in and then pulled you out and then pulled you in. And then the painted portion was like done in an impasto style and it looked like it was like a fork marks. Yeah.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/21/collection_resources/64219/file/148884#t=766.0,884.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/21/collection_resources/64219/file/148884/transcript/35422/annotation/35","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Alana Coulum: Wow.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/21/collection_resources/64219/file/148884#t=884.0,885.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/21/collection_resources/64219/file/148884/transcript/35422/annotation/36","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Janet Gomez: Then I began to see like hidden material, uh, materials underneath it, behind the thickness. And it was--this fire piece, it looked like, [pauses] she literally and metaphorically, stepping out of the fire. And I guess out of that car accident that she was in. So her viscerally, personal, and direct experience showed her aesthetics with reassembling, her tragic accident. She used art kind of as her therapy to recover mentally, physically and spiritually. And you can really tell with all the pieces that she had in this exhibit, in this gallery, and Howardena's art really resonated with me, and inspired me because of all her texture and bold marks that she used, and just kind of laying those thick, bold, marks on a canvas cloth. And you can actually see them! You can actually feel her, like, I guess her energy, and her passion, and her work. And it gave the art a sense of a movement, it kind of reminded me of like Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night with the texture and the brush strokes. So it was like, now what can we use to create art with? Since the resources were so limited. So I started teaching classes and workshops with creating art from recycled materials or household, you know, household items, things that we had at home. What can we use at home to repurpose and create something beautiful. And, this actually confirms that art can be anything, cause you can create anything, you know, and it can be called art.
