So that was a good experience. In 2007, I got a promotion as an assistant manager to Hillcrest, which is a different part of Queens. And then in 2009, I got oh while I was there at Hillcrest, I did a one month assignment down at Peninsula where I am now. So I didn't know anything about the Rockaways then, but that kind of gave me a taste that it's by the beach and it's, you know, it's a nice community. So in 2009, the Seaside Library manager opened up, which is right next to Peninsula. So they're only like 20 blocks away. So I applied for that and I got it. So I was at Seaside and that was ta good experience too. And then in 2012, I transferred just one branch over to the Peninsula library. Because in the summer, it's really busy with lots of people going to the beach and then the winter months it's actually kind of cold and windy and it's you know, I think it's just the setting is what makes this community pretty good. And, yeah, I've worked with some of the same staff for a long time now. And a lot of the customers come in, they're our regulars. So it does feel like almost like a small town, like I'm from Ohio. And sometimes Rockaway feels like smaller than New York City or, you know, because some parts of Queens and Brooklyn are so built up and so dense and here it's like you can walk you're at the beach and you can walk 10 minutes and you're at the bay. The sidewalks were so, they're so thick with sand, it looked like it was like a sand parking lot, not like cement underneath it. A lot of people just wanted to stay in the bus and some people checked their email on our bus computer, because we had a hotspot that, people were able to do that. And it really was block to block the information like the, the election day was like a week or two later - the presidential election of 2012. And we were originally a voting site for that. But I, you know, I feel like I, I've more, I kind of like the community. I kind of want to work, you know, Like a few years later I moved out here because - this like a resiliency. So after that in January, 2013, we got a temporary, like a mobile library, like a trailer space in front of the library. And that was another change because we had a new space and we had a budget where we could buy books and CDs and DVDs. And we filled that library up with materials and we're able to, you know, so that was an interesting change too. And we also got the donations and sometimes we gave away book donations, which the library usually doesn't do, because the donations usually go towards, you know, book sales or online book sales. And we were there until 2015 in the mobile thing. And then the new library, the inside, the renovation was done and that was another project. I think we had like one hundred bins of books to show before we reopened. So that was another challenge. And then I guess as far as changes, the pandemic was a change too. So they do it on their own, which is one thing I like about the public library is that it's a continuing education. People can at all stages of life can research and you know, self educate themselves. And, yeah, so a lot of that goes on here where people kind of work on their own thing, but they are, you know, doing things that are important to them.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/72630/file/158497#t=836.0,873.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/72630/file/158497/transcript/36425/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Fran Kipnis: Okay, great. And I think that, you know, we are poised to really help people with getting, you know, gaining the information they need, getting the services that they need. And, yeah, I just hope that like, we can be a community hub because we had before the pandemic, we had like the civics association use our meeting room. We had the local precinct use our meeting room. We had you know, like sometimes like environmental sort of projects for the, area. They did their presentations there. And yeah, and it was just, there was a lot of times where you walk in the library and every seat in the adult room and the Children's Room in YM was full, the LC was full and people were just using the library. So I hope it gets back to where we're busy and people can really use it and, yeah, that we are part of the community.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/72630/file/158497#t=885.0,967.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/72630/file/158497/transcript/36425/annotation/31","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Fran Kipnis: Great. I was a commuter student. I lived at home. And I didn't get a job right away after college, but I did end up working at Barnes and Noble and there, I met two retired librarians and they seemed to be, you know, enjoyed their careers and it was kind of nice talking to them. And then I had a wedding and I met a librarian and then one of my mom's friends was a librarian. So it just seemed like a good fit.
