I believe I was the last one to work when the quarantine started, and since March 15th, I have not worked. So I guess you could say, you know, it was, it was kind of complicated going through the process of unemployment and the process of not being able to go outside. When COVID started initially, I was extremely scared. I was extremely worried a week before work started. I was becoming very like, how you say cautious? I would constantly wear gloves. I would make sure I clean even more than I would usually do, especially at work, but when the quarantine really came by, I didn't go outside for like, I would say almost half a month. It was really like drastic for me. My mother, she has a lot of health conditions that aren't safe for her to catch COVID -COVID, isn't safe at all, but you know- it would be more of a risk for her to catch it. And so that always worried me. So I would anyone that would walk in the door, which was my father, mainly because we wouldn't even let people come in the house for a long time. I would spray them down with alcohol, their shoes, wash their clothes in the washing machine. So it was a lot of being cautious and very paranoid, I guess I can say, and as time went by, I wouldn't see a lot of, I actually haven't even seen a lot of my really close friends, but there are people that I see now little by little, but I still keep my caution when it comes to seeing people. I try to get tested regularly, but you know, like little by little, I started getting a little bit better with being calm about the whole situation, but still staying home, making sure everything's okay.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/943/collection_resources/39883/file/111501#t=174.0,292.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/943/collection_resources/39883/file/111501/transcript/77618/annotation/25","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Crystal Sanchez: It has been a struggle cause I have two younger sisters as well, and they do remote learning and it's actually extremely hard, especially in the beginning, um, to have them focus and pay attention as well as get the attention that they want and the freedom that they should have because they're kids. And it's really hard -that was one of the hardest things about being in quarantine that, you know, seeing my little sisters get really let down because they can't do anything and they're kids are supposed to be able to roam around and play. So I guess you could say those were like some things that I was kind of hard to go through. Just the paranoia of experiencing COVID. Yeah. Because I would say it was more difficult, especially for my mother, because my mother, like, you know, she's number one when it comes to help, like, you know, raising my sisters. So she would always constantly be on top of doing schoolwork, making sure they're doing what they have to do in the house, making sure that they're kept busy in the house so they don't get bored, so I would say it was definitely hard for her because she had to deal with so much baggage on her, on her back. Like she hadn't like help carry the girls, especially, and my siblings aren't that easy to deal with. They're very hyper. Yeah. So there was that, and I think it was actually hard for my sisters as well, because they're not seeing their friends in person. They're not being able to play with kids like they used to and you know, it would definitely let them down and they probably even -I'm going to use a strong word- but maybe they even gotten depressed because it's a drastic change in their life. But I still had moments where like, I would feel really scared that it'll make my heart like, you know, beat so many times that'll make me feel sick or I'll just be so paranoid. I'll get anxiety, you know? So that's what I was experiencing a lot. I was really down because I couldn't see people that were really important to me, and some people that still have not been able to see, so that really, made me feel a lot, you know, I guess I would say depressed. I did get a little depressed because my lifestyle changed. Everyone's lifestyle changed. You could even go outside anymore. You couldn't hang out with your friends, you couldn't go for a drink. So I couldn't even go to see them, and I had planned to see them in around April, May. So that was like cut off already. That wasn't even a question anymore. It was more about just having to always think about other people first and their health first, because you don't want there to be consequences. So I would always be in my friend's house every week, hang out with some people every week, I would even be with my boyfriend every other day, every week. And that all changed so fast. And the friends that I used to be with all the time, I haven't even seen them til this day and in person that is, but luckily we have something called the internet, you know, so we can actually communicate, and which has helped tremendously, if it wasn't for the internet. I don't, honestly, I probably felt, think I would be a little bit more depressed than what I say I am. You know, like I think that would have been a lot harder for everyone because we won't be able to see each other's faces or to communicate as much as we can now if you didn't have the internet. So luckily I speak to my friends, at least I would say at least once a week. So we still keep in contact. Even some family members that I keep in contact with, we do zoom calls, see each other. So that was one thing I can do. Like later on months after the lockdown, I was able to start going to his house little by little. So I will kill time with that, go to see him and actually kept busy this fall because, I went back to school and I was working on really big projects for my senior projects course. There was, there was a lot of things that happened during COVID besides having COVID like, especially the Black Lives Matter movement, even though it was such a big movement before, but because of the whole George Floyd situation, they got even bigger. So thankfully, because of unemployment, I was actually able to afford the new iPad. So I invested into that and I do, I started doing a lot more digital art with the iPad. So I actually did a painting for Black Lives Matter for George Floyd. -I apologize about the noise, sorry- but, yeah, so it was just, I had a lot of motivation from that. Also, the motivation of just getting something brand new and wanting to work on it. What else? You know, I guess COVID just like, it's, it's kinda weird, cause I would say it's a blessing and a curse, not working cause you have all this time. So with me not being able to work because of the quarantine, I was able to work more on my art. It's kind of weird because when walking and -like I can take a walk to Steinway area and that's usually where the stores are at. We can go shopping, and when walking into that area, there are a lot of stores that aren't there anymore or they're temporarily closed or there's even new shops, which is really surprising to me. Like I just noticed now, like earlier today I was taking a walk. I had to run some errands and there's a candy store across the street from my job, and they had a complete different, like a complete renovation. And that surprised me because you, I guess you, you would think initially that no, one's really making as much money. So you would be surprised seeing something brand new, but then it's kind of weird because you have something that's really brand new, and then right across the street, something that was there for 25 plus years is closed down, which is really weird and scary. Like, you know, a lot of stores that are very, what's the word precious to the neighborhood and that are known in the neighborhood for being like there for so long and then just automatically closing down because of COVID, it's really sad. And I can say that I've been noticing that, especially like a lot of businesses have shut down because of this. Like even right now, I recently passed by my job and I've heard -they actually reopened- my job did reopen, I would say towards the summer, and they, and they had some people working, but I couldn't work because my mom is so high risk at the moment. And they're very, you know, you're dealing with people no matter what. So when around summertime came, the owner has certain people work and then they just recently closed down a few weeks ago. But not like permanently, just like for the meantime, but at the same time, I'm not a hundred percent sure yet, like what's really happening with them. But even I noticed that with my job and it's, it's kind of crazy because even they've been open that building has been a bar since 1931, but the owner that I work with has owned it since 93.
