It feels like we live in a cocoon sometimes but every night this week we’ve been going out at 7 pm for cheering and clapping. Maybe the neighborhood was doing this before and we just didn’t hear it, I’m not sure. But this week it’s become a nightly tradition. We’ve added a tambourine and a bell shaker to the mix of clapping. And today someone added a big horn of some kind. Our block in Kew Gardens has buildings with terraces on either side of the street. Many of the restaurants have switched to delivery and take-out, with the tables and chairs pushed to the side, allowing only several people in at a time. It's sobering to see how many businesses on Ditmars are closed, and I worry that after we return to the new normal, a lot of the old "mom and pop" venues will have run out of money and time, leaving even more space for big business to rapidly move in and change the neighborhood into yet another faceless, "gentrified" place. It's heartbreaking to see some of the handwritten "closed" messages on doors of places that have existed in Astoria longer than the 25 years I've lived here. I'm a professional photographer and also work an overnight graphics gig (which I am grateful to be able to do from home), so I'm awake at odd hours. Since all forms of motorsports are postponed due to the pandemic, I have no fast cars to shoot, but photography is what I do and how I process the world, really, so I was itching to take photos. I take early morning walks to 24-hour stores to buy what I need when the rest of the world is asleep to avoid exposure, and have my camera with me. I started taking pictures of all of the signs in the storefronts just to document, then the little pockets of early morning activity on the otherwise empty streets. This is an ongoing project for me now - I stay in as much as possible but when I go on a grocery run I'll take the long way to take photos"
(summary)
Rights Statement

Copyright held by: Queens Borough Public Library

Date
2020-04-24 (created)
Agent
Jo-Ann Wong (Creator)","Geo Marin (Contributor)","Meral Agish (Contributor)","Megan Green (Contributor)
Language
English (primary)

This video is a compilation of crowdsourced submissions to the Queens Memory Covid-19 Project.
