Over the 23 years that I've worked here at Elmhurst Hospital. I have had many opportunities to work with Queens Public Library to promote different health promotion events. Because I'm the nurse practitioner for the breast clinic, I have done many outreaches where I have gone onsite to public libraries and given lectures and handed out literature. And I have always appreciated the enormous effort that the Queens Public Library staff has done to reach out to the communities to advertise that I was coming and to really make sure that I had a great turnout for my outreach to the community. And I was always impressed by the questions that the community would give me during these health promotion events. And, uh, I really think that I gave a lot to the community during these sessions, and I think that the community got a lot from them.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/50783/file/123673#t=50.0,119.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/50783/file/123673/transcript/32139/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Mary Madden: Queens Public Library responded to the changing needs of the communities. Another way that public, Queens Public Library has responded to the needs of the community is by having technology and internet access available to the community. Being a resource for the community regarding career advancement or career changes. So there are so many ways that Queens Public Library has worked to affect change as the community's needs change. My parents were immigrants to this country. My father had an, equivalent of a fifth grade education. My mother had a high school education and then trained to be a nurse, from, in England. She left Ireland and went to England. And when my parents came here, they wanted to make sure that us, my siblings and I got an education. And we went to the Woodside Queens Public Library every week. And we took out eight to 10 books each and my mother would wheel those books home in a shopping cart. And we would read those books. And when it was time to bring those books back, we brought them back and, you know, got our next set of books. And I went to the Queens Public Library and the librarian taught me how to write a research paper, helped me learn how to look things up, help me how to, find the filing system. So, you know, my becoming a nurse practitioner and navigating the education system was greatly affected by the help that I got from the Woodside Public Library librarians and the afterschool programs that they had. And so I'm happy to, I reach out and do things for Queens Public Library.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/50783/file/123673#t=174.0,257.0"},{"id":"https://queenslibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1432/collection_resources/50783/file/123673/transcript/32139/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Mary Madden: My hopes for the future of Queens Public Library is that it continues on its mission to help everyone in the community become a better version of themselves. Whether it's immigrants coming in, whether it's people that are here, whether it's adults wanting to advance their knowledge base. I think there's so many opportunities for Queens Public Library to enhance the life of Queens residents from young children, all the way up to elderly. My events that I have held at the Queens Public Library over the years have created an opportunity for people who maybe were afraid to go to the doctor, but somehow approaching me at an event was something that they felt comfortable with. And so I think that Elmhurst Hospital in conjunction with the Queens Public Library has saved lives because it was that bridge that allowed me to connect to someone that was afraid to come in. But when they connected with me and then I connected them to Elmhurst Hospital and you know, it really, it really did save a life on more than one occasion. So, you know, they're not just chit chats at a local library. They're really an opportunity for the community to be connected to a hospital that's there for them.
