There was no library, only a prefabricated building. She used to sit out and read on the lawn, and remembers that there were few cars on campus.  There were underground passageways connecting the buildings. The first new building was Remsen Hall, the science building, where she took classes as a Psychology major. None of the larger buildings that later came to campus were there yet and it was all open land from campus up to Main Street.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eClip 4: \u003c/strong\u003e Helene Schlesinger describes going back to graduate school at Queens College in 1966, and then began her teaching career in 1971. She taught reading, and then taught 5th and 6th grade. Then she taught Special Education for 10 years.  She got her second masters degree in Special Education at Adelphi. When Special Ed classes where going to be eliminated, her principal asked her to stay, and she taught 3rd grade for the rest of her career.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eClip 5: \u003c/strong\u003e When Mrs. Schlesinger first started teaching, African American children were bused in from South Jamaica Queens.  She taught at P.S. 219, where busing happened as well. She felt it was sad that since the kids had to leave at the end of the day, they didn't get to become friends with the local kids. She says her family moved to the area for the schools and because it was integrated. Her own kids went to P.S. 164, Campbell Junior High School, and John Bowne High School where her husband was on the board.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eClip 6: \u003c/strong\u003e Mrs. Schlesinger taught many new immigrants from Afghanistan, Russia, and South America in her 5th grade classroom. It was $18 for tuition, and you bought your own books.
