By early May, the New York Department of Labor  \u003ca href=\"https://www.labor.ny.gov/pressreleases/2020/may-08-2020.shtm\"\u003eannounced\u003c/a\u003e they had paid $6.8 billion in unemployment since the start of the pandemic. This number is nearly three times greater than the total unemployment payments made in 2019. While  \u003ca href=\"https://abc7ny.com/food-banks-nyc-coronavirus-pantries-update/6087495/\"\u003efood pantries\u003c/a\u003e  and other nonprofits scrambled to answer the call for help, their resources were  \u003ca href=\"https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2020/04/15/coronavirus-covid-19-nyc-food-pantries-emergency/\"\u003estrained\u003c/a\u003e  by the sharp spike in need.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn August 1st, Queens residents gathered outside the New York Hall of Science to receive food distributions. Senator Jessica Ramos hosted the event, which also offered  \u003ca href=\"https://qns.com/2020/08/queens-senator-hosts-food-distribution-event-at-new-york-hall-of-science/\"\u003efree COVID-19 testing.\u003c/a\u003e  Senator Ramos hosted regular fresh food  \u003ca href=\"https://qns.com/2020/05/queens-senator-offers-additional-free-fresh-food-hot-meal-distribution-events-in-east-elmhurst/\"\u003edistribution events\u003c/a\u003e  in the months after the pandemic upended life and income for many Queens residents. The event on August 1st was the 14th distribution. Michael Pereira, who was born and raised in Queens, was in attendance and talked about how this time away from work  has enabled him to take better care of himself physically and mentally. He also talks about the  \u003ca href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2016/16_0250.htm\"\u003esystemic dietary oppression\u003c/a\u003e  Latinx families face, as well as, the negative health impacts of  \u003ca href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4210655/\"\u003elow-income, predominantly minority neighborhoods due to low housing quality. \u003c/a\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMeanwhile, politicians and aspiring leaders try to adapt to campaigning and staying in touch with communities while social distancing. \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eQueens resident  \u003ca href=\"https://www.maryforassembly.com/\"\u003eMary Jobaida\u003c/a\u003e  was forced to derail her campaign for the New York State Assembly District 37 when the shutdown began. Jobaida immigrated to Queens from Bangladesh in 2001 and has lived in the area ever since. She talks about watching the gentrification of neighborhoods, pricing herself and her neighbors out of options. A 2019  \u003ca href=\"https://anhd.org/report/how-affordable-housing-threatened-your-neighborhood-2019?eType=EmailBlastContent\u0026amp;eId=15233186-62bf-48c0-9c2f-22bfa191e608\"\u003ereport\u003c/a\u003e  by the Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development found that, in Queens, the neighborhoods of Jamaica and Hollis were most at risk. This  \u003ca href=\"https://www.urbandisplacement.org/maps/ny\"\u003emap\u003c/a\u003e  shows gentrification throughout all of New York City. Jobaida decided to run for State Assembly in District 37 to help those who have been affected, against incumbent  \u003ca href=\"https://nyassembly.gov/mem/Catherine-Nolan/bio/\"\u003eCatherine Nolan\u003c/a\u003e  who was first elected in 1984.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJobaida says she originally thought about running for State Assembly in 2018. She filed the paperwork to do so in spring of 2019, using her professional name “Mary.” In April 2020, the board of elections removed her from the ballot upon learning her full name is Meherunnisa. Their stated reason being that the name in the application filing must match the candidate’s legal name. Jobaida, along with Moumita Ahmed, who was also removed for the same reason,  \u003ca href=\"https://sunnysidepost.com/board-of-elections-kicks-two-muslim-women-off-ballot-in-local-races\"\u003esued the BOE,\u003c/a\u003e  claiming xenophobia was behind the decision. In May, a  \u003ca href=\"https://queenseagle.com/all/jobaida-ahmed-back-on-ballot-queens-judge-rules\"\u003ejudge ruled\u003c/a\u003e  the two women will appear on the ballot.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eContinuing her campaign while social distancing, Jobaida was severely limited. A number of her organizers and campaigners contracted COVID-19, four of whom died. \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOne month before the election, unable to afford mailers, Jobaida utilized volunteers to operate phone banks. The Democratic Primary Election took place on June 23, 2020.  \u003ca href=\"https://ballotpedia.org/New_York_State_Assembly_District_37\"\u003eJobaida lost\u003c/a\u003e  to incumbent Catherine Nolan by 1,153 votes. Jobaida won 5,041 votes, while Nolan won 6,554. Jobaida suspects if she had been able to campaign in person, she would have won, and vows to continue the fight. \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003ca href=\"https://www.olearyforcouncil.com/\"\u003eBrent O’Leary\u003c/a\u003e  of Long Island City is running for City Council, District 26, which includes Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, and part of Astoria. O’Leary  \u003ca href=\"https://licpost.com/local-civic-leader-announces-candidacy-for-2021-city-council-race\"\u003eannounced his campaign\u003c/a\u003e  in the summer of 2018 - three years before the 2021 election. Now, he’s glad his campaign launched so early, as they were able to build momentum. However, the pandemic has slowed fundraising, he said, as most funds are normally raised during in-person events. He is also reluctant to ask people for money in the midst of the pandemic.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eInstead, O’Leary co-founded two emergency food pantries, in  \u003ca href=\"https://licpost.com/big-lines-form-outside-sunnyside-food-pantry-as-people-become-more-desperate\"\u003eSunnyside\u003c/a\u003e  and  \u003ca href=\"https://sunnysidepost.com/woodside-sunnyside-group-formed-to-help-restaurants-and-feed-those-in-need\"\u003eWoodside.\u003c/a\u003e  Ultimately, official campaign events ceased, but remaining active in his community helped keep O’Leary in the public eye, and demonstrated his priorities, he said.
