If you're elderly, there's a lot of nice accommodations for people, but kind of, there's also nothing going on. And I thought the people were a little snobby and they weren't really my cup of tea. So my friend and I moved there and it had the biggest kitchen to this day I've ever been in. And it was just such a great apartment. Unfortunately, her father got this awful disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and they had to sell the house and get medical care. So we had to go, but it was a lovely place to be for awhile. It had formerly been a gay bar, I believe and just over time, more and more women showed up and then it was gay friendly, but it wasn't specifically catering to men, but the bathroom had all these great ads from the fifties. Like these Jack LaLanne, like chest stretcher things. And it was like this relic to when it was a gay culture place. And it was a lot of fun. So in the course of the census, it went from being like 10% Asian to 90% Asian. And then Staten Island had this big Italian population explosion. But at the end of our time there, the mitigating factor for getting out was that they had to do asbestos removal in the subway. So it had already been like a 15 block walk to get to the subway. But when you're sitting at the bar, the amount of fun you want to interject yourself into is voluntary. When you're sitting at a table, it's great to be with your family or date, but you're constrained. And, you know, the people you're with, but when you're sitting in a bar, you can have these spirited discussions or these debates, or you play the jukebox, and it becomes a --well whoever's's there just becomes part of this party. And Neir's was always magical because they had these great bartenders that are always ready for everybody to have fun and the fact that you can't go up to a bar now, it really changes the Bar/ restaurant experience. It's just not the same because you could-- it's the same as going to a diner now. So you're sitting in a booth or I could make craft cocktails in my house where you lose that big experience of being in the, you know, the wraparound bench where people go and they're just sharing whatever they do at happy hour.
