It's been less than a year. I've been working at the Cambria Heights, Queens Public Library. I am currently a Youth Counselor and I work with the youth with assisting with homework, job placement, college referrals, and also with doing the FAFSA paper work for college. And in this community, we have very little or no community centers where kids can hang out, complete their homework, have someone to talk to. So it seems that Queens Public Library seen the need of the neighborhood and presented a nice, safe space for the children to complete their activities. And also they have a nice recording studio. So the library presents a lot of different opportunities for the children. They also have career days, so children can see other people that look like them from the community that have different careers and give them some sort of hope or knowing that they can be something-- make something of themselves. So in retrospect, looking back, I've never thought that a library would have that type of space or that they would provide those type of programmings to the community. Well, I have several stories, but one quick one is I had a teen, they were unaware of the services provided by the library. They were also in need of needing money and didn't have a clue about doing a resume or anything, or how the process of getting a job. So being at the space provides people like me to assist children. I was able to show the student how to make a resume. We completed the resume, uploaded the resume, and the child got a job at 17. I believe he is, and he's making $17 an hour at Target. So I feel there's a positive impact on the community and his life, 'cause he's able to fulfill what he needed in order to get ahead. And it was a positive, it was something positive. He didn't have to turn to the streets or anything. And at a young age, children don't have a lot of opportunities to make money.
